AutoCAD Civil 3D Tip: Adding Extended Data to Objects

Written by Bryan Sullivan.

AutoCAD Civil 3D allows extended data to be added to drawing objects. With the NOTES command, you can add either detailed or reference information to a selected object.

Use the NOTES command to write textual information that can be viewed with the object and associate a separate reference file (document, spreadsheet, image or photo, and so on). View the notes and documents later by using the Extended Data tab of the AutoCAD Properties Palette.

So I have applied this to features and objects in my drawing. My drawing consist of polylines and blocks only. Each with ‘EXTENDED DATA-NOTES’ specifying which record drawing gave me this data. I exported these features to shapefile via MAPEXPORT with the assumption that the EXTENDED DATA-NOTES could also be exported with it. I found out quickly that I was wrong to assume that because the NOTES were not included in the export.

Could you inform me on if there is way to include the EXTENDED DATA-NOTES with my EXPORT?
i.e. if I export these features to shapefiles, to import in another software (GIS in this case) where the NOTES is included in the export?

MAPEXPORT will only work with Map 3D Objects, Object Data, or AutoCAD objects. EXTENDED DATA-NOTES do not export.
