OpenRoads Designer Tip: Level Management in the Sheet Model

Previously we discussed how ORD manages levels in the Sheet model for the Plan view. The Default 2D (Design) model needs to be set as the active Model in View 1 within the View Group that was used to create Drawing and Sheet models to manage levels for the Plan view. There are some nuances to this when it comes to the Profile and Cross Section models.

When Profile Named Boundaries are created, they are typically created in a Profile model that is opened in Views 2-8.

The image above shows a “typical” View arrangement with the Plan view Default 2D model in View 1, and the Profile model in View 3. This View arrangement can be done manually by selecting Open Profile Model from the Context Toolbox, or by using the View Control macro (available in most configurations) shown in the images below.

Whether the Profile model is opened using the macro above, or manually from the Context Toolbox, the Plan view Default 2D model is already displayed in View 1. When the Profile sheet is created, a snapshot of the levels displayed in the Profile Model is carried through to the Drawing and Sheet models. If levels need to be modified after sheet creation, then the Profile model will have to be opened inside of View 1 where the Plan is currently displayed.

To display the Profile model in View 1, close the Profile model if it is open. Select the element that the Named Boundaries were created on, from the Context Toolbox, pick Open Profile Model, and then left-click inside View 1.

In this View, turn on or off the levels needed, save settings, and set View 1 back to the Plan View. This can be done by clicking on the icon in the upper left corner of View 1 to open the View Attribute dialog.

In View Attributes, under View Setup, pick the drop-down next to Models, and select Default.

This will return the Plan View back to View 1, and the level changes made in the Profile Design model will be carried through to the Drawing and Sheet models for this Profile.

To modify levels shown on the Cross Section sheets, the same process will need to be followed. However, the content the appears on a Cross Section sheets is driven by what is displayed in the 3D model. As previously mentioned, it is common to use the View Control macro. When this is done to display the 3D model, it opens it in View 2, and the Plan view remains in View 1. To manage levels on the Cross Section sheets after creation, the 3D model will need to be opened in View 1.

To set the 3D model in View 1, open View Attributes as described above, and select Default-3D (exact naming will vary based on the seed file used) from the Models drop-down.

Adjust the levels as needed and Save Settings. Follow the process described above to return View 1 to the Plan View.
