1) Have a Goal.

Although CAD may not be at the very top of your list of things to improve on in 2014, it’s still important to have a goal. Aim to be more proficient, learn 5 new tools, teach someone else a new tool, etc. Even if it’s small, pick out something you’d like to accomplish.

A Bonus: It will feel really good to cross something off your To-Do list.

2) Make a Deadline.

Now that you have a goal in mind, set a deadline. If you don’t have a time that it needs to be accomplished by… odds are it will never happen because of other priorities. But don’t be unreasonable either, set a deadline that gives you a little more than enough time so you don’t get overwhelmed if something else gets in the way.

3) Make it Challenging.

Choose a goal that will challenge you. Don’t take the easy way out. If you have a very limited knowledge of MicroStation, make it a goal to learn the Fundamentals. If you already know the Fundamentals, make it a goal to learn the Advanced side, etc.

4) Take One Step at a Time.

Learning the Fundamentals or Advanced features of MicroStation, or a new tool can seem overwhelming, especially with your current workload. Don’t fret. You don’t have to learn it all today, or this week, or this month. Just take the first step. And then one step at a time after that.

5) Repetition.

A small sum of effort will add up quickly. Keep repeating the process. Not only will you succeed – you’ll be a CAD wizard in no time!

6) Don’t Give Up!

If you don’t want to start over next year… don’t give up this year.
